I use Inkscape to create graphic assets for my iOS programs plus I have done simple poster design in it. I am not an graphic artist yet I find it produces good results. I hit my artistic limits way before I hit Inkscape limits. I actually find it pretty easy to use once you work out a few simple tricks Use layers aggressively they are a good way of separating your work into final and scatch modes. I do a lot of tracing - import a picture you like into one layer then fit a shape using the beziers to another layer. Finish by hiding the original image layer. As mentioned elsewhere its format is SVG (thus XML). This makes it easy to programatically process. I have written programs for layer extraction and filter injection. The SVG also shows the differences well when doing a git checking diff.
