What is the best software to manually compress website images (png, jpg) without losing quality to make the loading times faster?
Two tools I use are ImageOptim and TinyPNG. Both do a great job and can reduce images significantly with no visible degradation.

How do I compress pictures without losing quality?
Think about it Reducing the size of an had detail on that scale to begin with. However you may not notice the missing resolution. If the s by zooming into them to see a part of the resolution without losing any quality is by starting with an resolution aren better than others. Books and PhD dissertation have been written studying various ways to do this. You didn say whether you are looking for a personal service or a free web site some ready made free or paid software or aputer algorithm. Rather than trying to repeat the extensive literature about this let me just point you in the right direction. Here is a good StackOverflow Q&A on this topic What is the best -downscaling-algorithm-quality-wise The consensus of that discussion is that the Lanczos method is considered the best by many. The ImageMagick website has a detailed articleparing these methods at Resampling Filters #unix Windows #macosx iOS interpolation software.

How can I convert NEF files to JPG format without losing quality of the pictures?
Now that everybody told you that it is impossible I will try to teach you how to do it with minimum loss of quality or even with some gain in visual appeal of an . At this point you may slightlypensate for an error of exposure white balance enhance shadows or highlights levels gamma optical distortion etc. Note that NEF format contains more colour information (wider dynamic range) than JPEG. Correcting the file while it is still in NEF fomat allows you to use this benefit. To put it simple - you may pull more out of your that looks better than the shot you have originally taken! At least you should try to. That is exactly why the invented and introduced the RAW format. Once you are happy with the result save the file in TIFF or JPEG format with maximum quality. Yes JPEG is a lossy format but with the massive resolution of modern camera sensors you are unlikely to see any noticeable artefacts or defects. Have fun!

How would you explain to a layman the different kinds of image files?
The bad news there's no layman explanation to the variety of file formats. They all serve some kind of file formats I always draw a scheme of many (popular) file s that exs it all quite well. Ready for making a mental picture while reading ? Here we go... italic Divide the scheme in a left and right panel with so called object vector italic or draw italic oriented formats mainly to the left side (AI CRW EPS SWF SVG and mainly so called bitmap pixel italic or paint italic oriented formats (PSD TIFF Raw JPEG PNG GIF BMP) mainly to the right side. Next I ex which ones should be set lower and higher in these columns. First row native file formats. n AI and CRW on the left PSD on the right. italic nThese are rich file formats they contain all kinds of extra information (layers ges preferences swatches etc.) to be used to work in these files and continue editing exactly from where you saved and left the file. Second row exchange file s. n EPS on the left though inclined to be as well in the middle TIFF and perhaps thepressed RIFF to the right. italic nThese files were used to export from original native files and to import into legacy layout and drawing applications like PageMaker and QuarkXPress but they're not necessary to export anymore. Still there are millions of these files readily available and we keep using them them a lot. Some users still export and hand out EPS and TIFF files e.g. to hide the way they work in native files with layers and all or to drastically reduce the file size especially when using lots of layers in Photoshop. Raw italic file formats (like CRW NEF DNG etc.) are one way only. These files contain exactly what a camera lens has captured untouched upressed. So users never export to Raw file formats and hardly ever import them directly in layouts. They mostly go to Photoshop TIFF or JPEG to edit them and eventually decrease their enormous file size. Third row web ry at screen resolutions. To the left SWF and SVG and to the right JPEG GIF and PNG. italic Flash once started out as a tool for vector based format. Until SVG has gained popularity the 25 year old GIF (actually a pixel based file format) is very capable ofpressing s. These contain and require to retain thousands or even millions of colors. JPEG is more adapted to the task ofpressing pixel based details with real details. This yields drastic decreases in file size ranging from a third (highest quality) to a fraction of just 1 or 2 KB for a regular web picture (lowest quality). JPEGpression should not be used for vector based s (or certain areas) the JPEG will reveal its weakness in brightness levels. And a special note about transparency. nVector based s have difficulties with i.e. see-through parts like glass strands of hair smooth fabrics in clothing shadows blurred edges of out-of-focus objects etc. PSD files can contain transparency (the checkered areas) TIFF files can but it's not always supported by software JPEG files don't and will always show up as an opaque rectangle GIF can switch each files can bepared with a GIF or an 8-bit PNG at best. It's a truly outdated and restricted file format but hey screen captures on Windows are still using it so it can't be that bad... And where does PDF fit in ? nA PDF is not a file format with one specific of content. It's more a container capable of holding various kinds of content images video soundments interactivity form elements whatever you'd like to put into it. If a PDF contains just one drawing or photo you could try opening and editing it with Illustrator or Photoshop. In other situations it's best to leave it as-is. A final word to the laymans... nI'm hoping for the SVGs to be more widely spread and wishing for a JPEG-like format with subtle transparency. That would really get rid of the confusion for the web. Until then the layman's attitude should be hard colored drawing needs GIF photo's need JPEG and transparency needs PNG. But these three all perform weak in one or another aspect. Hope this helps ? italic

How can I convert videos to a smaller size without losing its quality - online?
Im going to give a short yet probably a very efficient answer here! Don waste your time installing any video editing software. The time it will take you to download it and install it will be much more than the time it will take you to download ffmpeg and do the task in a few seconds. Without quality loss means one those 2 options Full re-encode with a lossless codec (as the name implies it the opposite of lossy (not really the best option) This can be done with pretty much any editing tool as long as you export with lossless codec h264 with cfr = lagarith nI would go for avisynth with any encoder of your choice or Virtual Dub Trim in-place without re-encoding.(faster + best for archiving ) You can simply trim without modifying the codec or wasting time to re-encode the entire video. but there is one problem in this case cutting depends keyframes. You can cut at any second of your choice. If you split with mkvMerge it will split without re-encode and will just round your trim to the closest keyframe. This will give inaccurate result Another way to get around this is by using ffmpeg you can get accurate cut without whole video re-encoding with ffmpeg. It will just re-encode the first few frames and the last few frames (the quality loss will only occur for less than a second of the entire length of your video!)

What is the best tool to optimize images for the web?
When you are optimizing s? How easy it is to do basic optimizations and then more advanced ones like network-basedpression smart cropping real-time banners etc. Resize and crop . And a lot more ordered-list And ites with 2GB free band every month! nDo give it a try.

What are the best ways to compress or shrink a large PDF file?
CMYK-Colormanagement Files *.icc are often . For a presentation you do NOT need CMYK-colormanagement. Just convert everything in your file to sRGB and include this .icc-profile drop the other CMYKs. You can do this with Acrobat Pro or DC. A single CYMK-Profile like ECI ISO coated v2 takes up to 12 MB. A simple RGB Profile just about 5 KB. If you don any .icc-Files your PDF will look weird on Wide-Gamut Screens. ResolutionnForget about this 72 dpi-stuff. For screen purpose take 15 ppi. So you allow others to zoom in a bit and the images stay sharp. In fact resolution isn such a killer .icc-files are and this without any visible 15 ppi you allow others to make copies on a homeprinter or laserjet. The CMYK-printer will call you nuts with this file. Saving in higher PDF-StandardsnThis allows better internalpression of the PDF-streams yes Ask me about joboptions. Those files consist of settings for Acrobat Pro Do not forget to tell me the utilization. A optimal CMYK-Print-File is something very different to a presentation. Haha and it different here in europe too. We use ECI ISO coated as a general CMYK-output ICC For all of those who need fact and numbers in a shot termnI made tests with the same PDF-File written by InDesignnPrinting purpose with CMYK .icc-Data 1.4 MBnScreen purpose with sRGB 15 ppi JPG 8% 35 KB
